A few years ago I travelled to Japan for work. I was apprehensive about communicating about my vegan food requirements as I do not speak much Japanese. Although I always learn the words to greet people and say thank you in every country I have visited. Luckily we were assigned from the Japanese company we were working for a very nice gentleman who spoke very good English. He said that I was the first vegan he had every met. He was interested about veganism and did understand why I was vegan. Anyway, I did survive thanks mainly to him as I would have been very lost without him. I found the Japanese people to be very courteous and are the most hospitable I have ever met.
Below is a photo of the vegan meal I had in a mall in Kyoto. Three types of bean curd. The flavours were very good. One flavour that I loved was the dressing on my salad which was a sesame dressing.
Recipe – Japanese Sesame Dressing
- 3 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp ground white sesame seeds (tahini)
- Mix rice vinegar, soy sauce, and sugar in a small bowl.
- Add ground sesame seeds and sesame oil in the dressing and stir together.
